You should be able to change the forum timezone to what fits your needs.

| While that would be possible, the site runs in GMT globally as it makes things far simpler to keep track of. If someone were to make a time related comment, or set a time for an event, the chances are that people would get incredibly confused. It's a similar reason to why Jagex keep everything in GMT, over their forums and all (even the ones in different languages).
I'll not completely dismiss this however - if this gathers enough support then I may implement it in the future.

| Hey there,
I also like this idea, but we need to think of a strategy to implement it. Perhaps have the GMT time and the altered time on the posts to stop people being so confused?

Store everyone's offset as an integer in the database (0, 3, -7, etc.) Then, make all post timestamps like, $post['timestamp'] + $user['time_offset']. Then, to fix this problem you've thought of, create a bbcode like [time], which you enter a timestamp in, and it converts it to the user's time.
Like,
[time="1279589152"] => Tuesday, December 11th at 2:10 PM
(the 2:10 being the dynamic part)
Or it could just output the time of day without the date. Or instead of inputting a timestamp, you could input the time of day in GMT 24 hour time. [time=18:43] |

| It's easier than that Erik - all times are controlled by a timezone function, which is currently set to "date_default_timezone_set('Europe/London');". It'd be simple enough to replace the content with the setting the user chose.
As I said though, the implementation's not the problem, the repurcussions are (people confused due to multiple timezones).
Though I'll say now that the [time] idea (second one, just a h:m format) was one I had thought about before, thanks for reminding me.

And if it's somebody talking about a future event, posts from the PAST are gonna have absolutely nothing to do with that. As long as they put "GMT" next to it, it doesn't take a birdbrain to work out the local time given you know your GMT-difference.
The idea of a user-specific TZ on a post is so they have some idea of how long ago that post was made, and stops us having to make some sort of "posted 34 minutes ago" system.
Perhaps it's just me not understanding, but these "repercussions" don't make much sense.

| I agree with Shemp, understanding the difference between two certain points in time is much easier if the whole site keeps only one time zone.
Anyways, if you wish to check the time, look at your clock or phone - not a very difficult task.
